August 2014 OUCH! Newsletter

This month's OUCH! Newsletter focuses on encryption.  I want to amplify some of the points they make in the newsletter.

First, practice with strong passwords before you begin using encryption products on your computer or mobile device.  If you encrypt your whole computer hard drive and you forget your password, you won't be able to get your data back!  Please don't just jump in and make your computer so secure that even you cannot get into it!

Second, they mention to use the strongest encryption method available, but offer no basis for comparison.  For consumer wi-fi:  WPA2 is better than WPA; WPA is better than WEP; and WEP is better than nothing (but not by much).  College (and business) wi-fi will generally select a single option for you.  For portable device protections, you may want to look over the resource page for Travel Precautions.
