Fake Virus Pop-Up

November 20, 2014:  I've had several reports this afternoon of users being deceived by a pop-up claiming to have found viruses or other problems on the computer, and directing the user to click to clean, update or purchase.  THIS IS A SCAM.  Clicking the link will actually cause an infection.  Here is an example of what the pop-up may look like:

College computers are protected by the Sophos antivirus product.  In most cases, this will intercept malware silently; if it puts up a window, that window should display the Sophos logo.

Please be skeptical of sudden pop-ups, and don't be panicked into clicking unexpected links.  If you think your computer may already be infected, please contact your campus Customer Support for assistance.  It may be necessary to reimage your computer.
