Did you get one of the flyers (PDF) during a Resource Fair or Welcome Days Event?  What is up with those crazy statistics?

The assertion about money lost comes from the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics, in a report titled Victims of Identity Theft (another PDF).  On page six, in a side bar, the median loss was $2,183.  The mode was a more modest $300, which means that most people lost a few hundred dollars; but those who lost more, lost a lot more.

The eighteen computers compromised per second?  This article explains the average put out by the FBI during a congressional hearing.

Not mentioned in the flyer, but in a similar vein, this article from USA Today talks about the growing problem of Identity Theft.

Neither the flyer nor the web site are here to tell you that you're doomed.  There are, in fact, things you can do to protect yourself.  Please browse the resources tab above, and start looking at the various things you can do to make the bad guys' job harder.  There are all kinds of things to reduce the risk to your identity, your money, and your devices.

Want more information?  Look over the Presentations page above.  I'm available to any group of students, faculty or staff that want me to stop by for an hour and talk on any of these topics.  If your group wants more information, send me an email and we'll take a subject and jump into it in depth.
